Stingray was in several respects very different from its two immediate ancestors, Fireball XL5 and Supercar . Lew Grade of ITC directed the Andersons to produce their programs primarily for the American market. Supercar and Fireball XL5 had both been filmed in black & white, as was the standard at that time. However, as Fireball XL5 was wrapped up, it became apparent that color television was eventually going to become the standard in America. Therefore, Lew Grade ordered the Andersons to produce their next television series in color. Thus, Stingray was filmed in color.
